I am a crossword puzzle fanatic. And I’m proud of it! If someone took a look through one of my millions of crossword puzzle books, they would probably judge me as someone who does not finish what I start. Well that may be true for crossword puzzles but that is far from the truth when it comes to life in general. I like to think that I’m a goal-oriented person that is good at completing tasks. But when it comes to crossword puzzles, they are not tasks meant to complete. They are tasks meant to distract me from the world around me. Crossword puzzles take me out of my world of stress, chaos and noise. When I sit down and get lost in a crossword puzzle, I stop thinking about anything else for that moment. I might pick a puzzle up for 5 minutes and put it down when I feel ready to focus back on my responsibilities in the world. And sometimes, I’ll pick one up for about 30 minutes and nearly finish it. But ask me if I care about finishing them…nope! I’m just happy I have crossword puzzles as my distractions from myself.
What is your healthy distraction? Well first off, how do you even know the difference between a healthy distraction and an unhealthy distraction? One word, emotion. Distractions are meant to be temporary. They are meant to be emotionless. So for those of you who use social media a lot, I warn you to not make social media your distraction. Social media is filled with emotions. So while scrolling through facebook first thing in the morning while lying in bed, on the toilet, on the train or at work on your break, you are filling your down time with a lot of emotions from others and heightening your own emotions. Do yourself a favor, find a boring distraction void of emotions. It’ll be easy to pick up, put down and a nice break from all the feels of daily life.
