Body image is a sensitive topic. Why is that? Why do we have such a hard time really taking a look at our bodies? The sensitivity is linked to harsh judgements that leads to low self-esteem. It’s a real shame that we are so quick to critique our bodies rather than affirm our unique and one-of-a-kind beauties.
Body Positivity is a term that emerged in 1996. It encourages that all people have a positive body image regardless of the judgments and stereotypes of popular culture and society. Body Positivity promotes that all bodies are beautiful. This mindset and belief starts with YOU!
Body Positivity requires a reframing of deep ingrained thinking. The way we view our bodies stems from core beliefs. These thoughts are very challenging to change. Why is that? Because they’ve been a part of our schemas since childhood! And so, I recommend not taking on this challenge alone.
Surround yourself with people who also promote Body Positivity. Perhaps you can follow advocates on your social media accounts. Receiving Body Positive messages throughout your day can help change your deep ingrained thoughts. Exercise facilities are starting to adopt these values as well. Find the gyms that are “judgment-free” and affirm the acceptance and beauty of all bodies.
The mental health benefits of Body Positivity are insurmountable! Body Positivity can reduce depression, increase self-esteem and minimize eating disorders. Again, it all starts with YOU and your thinking. I can sit here and tell you that you’re beautiful but it doesn’t mean a thing unless you believe it for yourself.
